Epidural injections are a useful adjunct in the rehabilitation in patients whose back/neck pain radiates into the arm/leg. They work by placing an anti-inflammatory steroid medication close to an inflamed nerve, thereby allowing the patient to regain full motion and increase the muscular support of the spine. This reconditioning of the muscles and improved flexibility aids recovery and reduces the likelihood of future episodes. Most patients require 1-2 injections to receive the full benefit.
These injections treat back and neck pain caused by arthritis using a targeted steroid injection or advanced radiofrequency techniques. The duration of benefit can last from 3-6 month for simple steroid injections to 18 months for radiofrequency techniques. This pain free period allows the patients to concentrate on strengthening muscles and improving flexibility which will provide long term benefit and prevent relapses.
Persistent pain can be due to a combination of mechanical and nerve related pain elements. Many standard over the counter medications fail to deal with the nerve (neuropathic) elements of pain. Our consultants will be able to assess the likelihood of a nerve pain and advised on the best anti-nerve pain medications.
These are specialised programmes that deal with the psychological effects and disability associated with persistent pain conditions. They commonly involve a pain specialist, pain psychologist and pain physiotherapist.
